As I'm finish-sanding an instrument like Joel's Allegro Classical to prepare it for finish, there's an acoustically important aspect to the process, which is that I'm taking the the down the thickness of the top plate very slighty in various areas until I feel that the flexibility of the top is just what I'm looking for. Without the bridge, which acts as an additional transverse brace, the top is very flexible, and that more than anything else is the critical aspect to building a responsive instrument.
